Welcome to Our Lab

We are a collaborative, student-focused research group committed to the ethical and professional study of animal behavior. To maintain a productive, respectful, and inclusive research environment, all lab members—whether trainees, students, or senior researchers—are expected to follow these core expectations:

Lab Expectations & Code of Conduct

1. Respect and Professionalism

  • Treat all team members with respect, regardless of their role or experience level.

  • Accept feedback with maturity and openness—constructive criticism is part of the learning process.

  • Disrespectful behavior, including eye-rolling, sarcasm, talking over others, or dismissiveness toward team leads or fellow researchers, will not be tolerated.

2. Active Engagement and Preparedness

  • Come prepared for all lab sessions, including bringing required materials and following through on any assigned tasks.

  • Be attentive during training sessions—phones and other distractions must be put away while being instructed or while others are speaking.

  • Arrive on time, engaged, and ready to participate fully.

3. Communication

  • Ask questions—we encourage curiosity and critical thinking.

  • If you are unsure about a method or decision, raise it respectfully and at the appropriate time.

  • Follow group communication protocols (e.g., WhatsApp, email) and respond in a timely and professional manner.

4. Adherence to Protocol

  • Follow all research procedures, data collection methods, and observation tools as trained—these protocols are carefully selected and serve to protect the scientific integrity of our work.

  • Suggestions for change are welcome, but must be discussed with and approved by lab leads before being implemented. Defying instructions to use alternate methods without approval is unacceptable.

5. Accountability and Consequences

  • You are responsible for your behavior, preparation, and growth as a researcher.

  • Repeated failure to meet expectations—especially disrespect toward team members, lack of preparedness, or refusal to follow protocol—will result in immediate dismissal from the lab.

  • Students dismissed from the lab will lose access to all research privileges, including any institutional or zoo-related access provided through our program. Any lab badges must be returned to the Psychology Department immediately.

By participating in this lab, you agree to uphold these expectations and contribute positively to our research environment. Your conduct reflects not only on you but on the integrity of the entire team.

You too may want to take on challenges to save vital species like orangutans. Know that your road won’t be easy and the fight will be hard, but the reward – helping save animals, habitats and the Earth itself – will always be worth the battle.
